The History of Our Company

Established in 1971 by Sam Stewart Sr., and his son, Sam Jr., our company began as an extension of the family's dry-cleaning business, Stewart Cleaners. Tuxedos were furnished to Sam Sr. by an out-of-town supplier and were rented out of a small corner of the Cleaners until the business grew so large that it needed its own location. At that time, Sam Jr. took over the tuxedo business, while Sam Sr. remained in the dry-cleaning business. Sam Jr. named the business Stewart’s Tuxedo Shop and moved it to Noble Street. Along with the move, the young entrepreneur purchased 40 black coats, 50 black pants, and 30 white shirts. By July 1996, Stewart’s Tuxedo Shop had blossomed into one of the largest formal wear stores in Alabama. Rapid growth and popularity caused Sam Jr. to take on two business partners, Michael A. Delozier and Marc K. Webb, both of whom were long-time employees. With the formation of the partnership came the name change to Sam Stewart Formal Wear. In September 2003, Michael and Marc purchased the tuxedo business from Sam Jr. Michael and Marc have continued the use of the Stewart family name. Most importantly, they have upheld the loyalty to customers and integrity in business instilled by Sam Sr. Sam Stewart Formal Wear continues to grow to unexpected heights, stocking OVER 50,000 pieces of inventory in a 16,000 square foot warehouse in Calhoun County. Having an in-town warehouse allows the filling of same-day orders, pick-ups, and exchanges, all of which are important when you want your special occasion to be perfect!

Elegant Evenings offers the ladies of Calhoun County a new choice in formal wear. The same business philosophy of customer service and integrity has been adopted by Elegant Evenings, along with providing the very latest styles and fashions from this year’s top designers at competitive prices.
